Aranka Siegal was born at Beregszász (today Berehove in Ukraine) in 1930 in a family of seven children. In 1944 the family was deported to Auschwitz and then to Bergen-Belsen. When that camp was liberated in 1945, she and one of her siblings, Viola were the only surviving members of the family. After spending three years in Sweden, she settled in the United States in 1948. Upon the Head of the Goat has received numerous literary honors and has been translated into several languages.
